You generally use one hand. Two if you need more control or power or speed.
This is the best multi-function sword of mine to date.

It's somewhat of a half/half. I referenced Shadow's pose from the Sonic X artwork, because I couldn't think of anything better at the time, while almost all of the face and shoe details I did freehand. I can do a lot better nowadays than I did in this picture, haha.
